Analysis and Control of Period-Doubling Bifurcation in Buck Converters Using Harmonic Balance
نویسندگان
چکیده
Period doubling bifurcation in buck converters is studied by using the harmonic balance method. A simple dynamic model of a buck converter in continuous conduction mode under voltage mode or current mode control is derived. This model consists of the feedback connection of a linear system and a nonlinear one. An exact harmonic balance analysis is used to obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a period doubling bifurcation to occur. If such a bifurcation occurs, the analysis also provides information on its exact location. Using the condition for bifurcation, a feedforward control is designed to eliminate the period doubling bifurcation. This results in a wider range of allowed source voltage, and also in improved line regulation. Keywords— bifurcation, DC-DC converter, harmonic balance, instability

Bifurcation Behavior in Parallel-Connected Buck Converters
This paper describes the bifurcation phenomena of a system of parallel-connected dc/dc buck converters. The results provide useful information for the design of stable current sharing in a master–slave configuration. Computer simulations are performed to capture the effects of variation of some chosen parameters on the qualitative behavior of the system. These are summarized in a series of bifu...
متن کاملA New Formal Approach for Predicting Period Doubling Bifurcations in Switching Converters
Period doubling bifurcation leading to subharmonic oscillations are undesired phenomena in switching converters. In past studies, their prediction has been mainly tackled by explicitly deriving a discrete time model and then linearizing it in the vicinity of the operating point. However, the results obtained from such an approach cannot be applied for design purpose. Alternatively, in this pape...
متن کاملBifurcation in a System of Coupled Buck Converters
This paper studies the bifurcation behaviour of a system of coupled buck converters under current-mode control. The effects due to the variation of the reference current are studied. It has been observed that the system exhibits low-frequency bifurcation behaviour while period-doubling at switching frequency is suppressed. Extensive simulations are used to capture the findings. Time-domain wave...
متن کاملUsing Nyquist or Nyquist-Like Plot to Predict Three Typical Instabilities in DC-DC Converters
By transforming an exact stability condition, a new Nyquist-like plot is proposed to predict occurrences of three typical instabilities in DC-DC converters. The three instabilities are saddle-node bifurcation (coexistence of multiple solutions), period-doubling bifurcation (subharmonic oscillation), and Neimark bifurcation (quasi-periodic oscillation). In a single plot, it accurately predicts w...
متن کاملSymbolic Analysis: A Practical Alternative Viewpoint of Border Collision
In this paper, a symbolic method is proposed for analyzing the bifurcation in switching power converters. This method focuses on the cyclic operation of the system which characterizes its bifurcation behavior. The concept of block sequence is introduced, which, in conjunction with the periodicity of the system, can be used to distinguish the various types of bifurcation behavior, e.g., “smooth”...
